A New Player in the AI Market
Chinese artificial intelligence startup Zhipu AI has introduced a free AI agent, AutoGLM Rumination, as competition in China’s AI sector continues to heat up. The announcement was made by CEO Zhang Peng during a launch event in Beijing on Monday.
Capabilities and Features
AutoGLM Rumination is designed to conduct deep research and execute various tasks such as web searches, travel planning, and research report writing. The AI agent is powered by Zhipu’s proprietary models, including its reasoning model GLM-Z1-Air and foundation model GLM-4-Air-0414.
Zhipu AI claims that GLM-Z1-Air matches the performance of DeepSeek’s R1 model while operating up to eight times faster and using only one-thirtieth of the computing power, making it a highly efficient alternative.
The Rise of AI Agents in China
AI agents are autonomous systems capable of making decisions and executing multiple tasks. Zhipu AI’s launch follows a surge of AI product releases in China, triggered by DeepSeek’s introduction of a cost-effective model earlier this year.
It also comes just weeks after Manus, another competitor, garnered attention by marketing what it claimed to be the world’s first general AI agent. Unlike Manus, which charges users up to $199 per month, Zhipu’s AutoGLM Rumination will be accessible for free via the company’s official website and mobile app.
Zhipu AI’s Growth and Ambitions
Founded in 2019 as a spinoff from a Tsinghua University laboratory, Zhipu AI has quickly emerged as a leading Chinese AI startup. The company has developed the GLM series of large language models and asserts that its latest model, GLM4, surpasses OpenAI’s GPT-4 in several benchmark tests.
Government Support and Funding
Zhipu AI recently made headlines after securing three consecutive rounds of government-backed funding within a single month. The most recent investment, amounting to 300 million yuan ($41.5 million), came from the city of Chengdu.
With substantial financial backing and innovative AI technology, Zhipu AI is positioning itself as a formidable player in China’s rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. Its latest launch is set to intensify the domestic AI race, challenging both local and international competitors.
